Melbourne Cup: Thoroughbreds & Bubbles

The biggest horse race in the world was here, and the past two days of drizzly showers wasn’t going to dampen the day! In fact, things were looking mighty fine for the mud-running thoroughbreds, with AFFINITY's enthusiasm for the event unabated.

For us, this was still an Emirates classed jamboree and there was nothing short of top notch bubbles and authentic race day activities for the AFFINITY team. Although, not being able to witness the world-famous Melbourne Cup Race in person, we chose to host our own Flemington to Darlinghurst celebration, because who needs the lavish glitz and glam when you’ve got fantastic company and French champagne.

A simple, yet incredibly thoughtful tea-party was in store, hosted by none other than The Social Club…

First race of the day: Attempting to elegantly devour our canapes, whilst maintaining balance and dipping one hand into the sweepstakes bucket. With the team clutching their destiny for the ultimate prize – a bunch of crisp Aussie $5 notes, with hot tips from the experts circulating for Marmelo and Almandin (last year’s hottest horse).

But that wasn’t all, the team from Darlinghurst was giving Flemington’s Fashion on the Fields a run for their money. Whether it was taking part in the coveted fascinator competition, or simply sporting a tie or bright pop of cherry lipstick. The team was in fine form.

It was soon to be 2.59pm, as we all scurried to get a good view of Race 7 ‘The Race that stops the Nation’, courtesy of media giant, Twitter, who live streamed the race on their platform.

As the gates opened, and the striding thoroughbreds began the three-minute, 3200m long run, and the ground trembling, anticipation overtook our bodies. Of course, it was down to a photo finish, with the courageous REKINDLING clutching the heralded gilded cup by both hooves. Cheers and smiles were all round, especially Matt, who held the winning ticket for the day.

The day could not have gone any better. The sun was now shining, and with bubbles in hand, we treated ourselves to warm home-baked crumbly scones, doused in indulgent clotted cream and boats full of strawberry jam. Winners all round.
